What do my kids needs in a post-divorce holiday?

If you have gotten divorced this year and are looking ahead at the upcoming holidays wondering how you will make it through, you are not alone. Countless other Illinois residents are either in your situation or have been there before. If you have children, your challenges at this holiday time can be even greater as you need to figure out how to help them navigate what will certainly be a very different type of holiday season than they are used to.

WebMD suggests that one way to help you get through things is to make whatever plans you can ahead of time. When there is too much uncertainty in the air, kids can become more anxious or stressed. Letting them know what to expect and who they will be with on what days can help to alleviate or reduce this for them. It is equally important for you to manage any stress, anxiety or depression you may feel. Finding a good support system is important in doing this so you can enjoy the holidays and be the support your kids need you to be.

When it comes to traditions, try to find a blend of the old ones and some new ones. This will retain the warmth of the tried and true but also bring in a little excitement and let your kids be part of making these new traditions.

This information is not intended to provide legal advice but instead is meant to offer helpful tips and suggestions to parents in Illinois who may be experiencing their first holiday season after getting divorced.
