How divorced parents can help kids

Illinois parents who get divorced must often put the needs of their kids ahead of their own feelings. This may well be easier said than done sometimes when a potentially frustrating situation erupts with a former spouse. But, with a bit of consciousness and commitment, divorced moms and dads can learn to co-parent positively.

Coparently, a source of tools for divorced parents, explains that one of the most basic needs of kids is a strong relationship with both parents. Maintaining this is really the responsibility of the parents and can help children's emotional development. One of the best ways that parents can promote this is by keeping conflict and fighting not just to a minimum but out of the ears and eyes of the kids.

Bright Horizons adds that in addition to avoiding conflict, moms and dads should try and grab opportunities to say nice things about each other to their children. This is the best way to send kids the message that it is acceptable for kids to love both parents.

Also important for children is consistency and stability. When kids all of a sudden have to move between homes, some of this can be disrupted. However, parents may help restore this by maintaining rules, schedules and routines that were followed before they divorced. The more consistency children have in their pre- and post-divorce lives as well as at both homes, the less jarring it will be for them when transitioning between homes. This might also help avoid conflict between parents due to inconsistent rules.
