When grandparents become parents

If you are like most people who become grandparents in Illinois, you instantly experience a joy that is so incredibly unique. It is understandable to be very excited about this special relationship you can have with your grandchildren as they grow. However, if you have all of a sudden found yourself needing to assume full-time parenting responsibilities for your grandchildren, you should know that things will change.

AARP suggests that you approach this situation carefully and with a clear view on what will be expected or needed from you. It is also highly encouraged that you discuss the situation with other extended family members as they may be able to provide helpful support either for your grandchildren directly or by assuming more responsibility for other family needs such as your own aging parents should they still be living.

Seeking out a local support group for grandparents who once again become parents may be highly beneficial as you can connect with others in similar situations as you. Do not feel shy about asking for help from friends or family members and definitely seek out babysitters or other care assistance such as that offered with before or after school programs. Be upfront with your social peers about what you will and will not be able to do and ask them to be patient as you settle into your new routine and responsibility.
