Should I spend Christmas with my ex for my kids?

Have you gotten divorced in Illinois this year and are now facing your first holiday season in which your kids must split their time between you and your former spouse? Are you wondering how you can most elegantly handle this situation for you and for your kids? Those are very understandable questions.

While the specifics of how to best make it through the holidays as a divorced parent may vary from family to family, there are some guidelines that you can follow when figuring out what works best for your family. According to Psychology Today, one thing you could consider doing is actually spending some time as a whole family. This might mean you or your children's other parent agreeing to spend Christmas morning at one home so the kids can have both of you there when they are opening presents. It might mean putting up a Christmas tree together with the kids.

Whatever you think of, the cardinal rule here is that the adults must get along and ensure the atmosphere will be free of any conflict for the good of the children. It is important that you keep in mind that sharing such time over the holidays might allow your kids to hold on to hopes that you will get back together. You may need to have conversations with your children about any this.

This information is not intended to provide legal advice but is instead meant to give divorced Illinois parents some ideas on how they can make the holidays special for their kids after a divorce.
