Child custody and the complexities of co-parenting

Divorced parents in Illinois might not have been prepared for the challenges of co-parenting. The problems do not stop when the divorce is finalized. Regardless of who has child custody, parents of young children will have to work out parenting plans to facilitate communication and decision making for years to come. If they can find a way to do that amicably, it will benefit parents and help the children to adjust to the new circumstances.

Resources are available to assist with the creation of workable parenting plans that will help parents to focus on the children's needs and keep an eye on the future rather than the past. Parents are advised to commit to continuing communication with each other -- even if it has to be through e-mails because personal contact is too challenging. If both parents have the child's best interests at heart, they might find mutual ground on which to base negotiations to ensure objectivity.

Problems can be avoided if both parents focus on each other's positive attributes when talking to the children rather than demonstrating their feelings of frustration, anger and resentment. It is never a good idea to use the children as messengers or sources of information about what happens in the other parent's life. One other issue that can make co-parenting a lot easier is consistency. This includes boundaries, rules, discipline and anything that can contribute to the child's perception of a happy family -- even if separated.

Establishing parenting plans that focus on the best interests of the child while also accommodating the schedules and new lives of both parents can be extremely challenging. This is where the skills of an experienced Illinois family law attorney come in. A lawyer can answer questions about child custody, visitation and all relevant matters and arrange for mediation, if necessary.
