How a forensic accountant may help you

If you are getting a divorce in Illinois, you know that somehow you and your spouse will need to divvy up your debts and assets. This is rarely an easy thing for people to do as it may well involve giving up some of your assets and that is something few people ever really want to see happen. However, before you rush into decisions with your spouse about this, it may be important to step back and make sure you are actually capturing all of the information you need to.

As Forbes explains, some spouses find the use of a forensic accountant to be particularly useful when getting divorced. A forensic accountant has knowledge like any other accountant but emphasizes finding potential fraud. Examples of this in a divorce include the use of a business as a means of divertiging or hiding assets. The business may even be used as a tool for padding debt to make it look like the spouse has more debt than they actually do.

If your spouse has a job with a complex compensation structure including things like bonuses, commissions, stock options and more, a forensic accountant may be a good idea. Other situations in which this type of professional may be beneficial in a divorce include when a couple has assets like art or expensive jewelry.
