Study: Finding Love on Dating Apps Might Lead to Early Divorce

A Belleville, IL Divorce Attorney Reveals Why

Married couples who met online through dating apps are more likely to get a divorce, according to a new study.

As reported in the New York Post, the study, entitled “Relative Strangers: The Importance of Social Capital for Marriage,” concluded that 12 percent of couples who found their significant other online got divorced within the first three years of marriage compared to only 2 percent of couples who met through friends.

The study was conducted by the Marriage Foundation in conjunction with a UK-based polling company. Researchers polled over 2,000 adults who were at least 30 years old and married at least once. They took into account factors such as gender, age, and occupation.

The study also found that the percentage of those likely to split went up over time. After seven years of marriage, the likelihood of divorce for a couple who met through an app rose to 17 percent, compared to 10 percent of those who met through a friend or family member.

The research also found that 7 percent of spouses who met at work and 8 percent of couples who hooked up in school divorced within the first three years.

Harry Benson, the foundation’s research director, explained that couples who meet online are marrying relative strangers.

“Our finding in no way undermines or diminishes the vital role of online dating,” he said. “But it does highlight the greater risks and difficulties of getting to know a relative stranger where reliable sources of background information and subsequent social support are less readily available.”

Make no mistake about it: online dating is here to stay. Another separate study was conducted by the dating app eHarmony and the Imperial College Business School in 2019. It found that by 2037, the parents of most children born in the United Kingdom will have met online.
