We associate summer with many things: the beach, ice cream, vacations, and much more. Apparently, divorce can be added to that list.
That’s according to a recent analysis of Google Trends data, which found a massive increase in searches for “divorce lawyer” between April and June 2025, according to the New York Post. It’s not yet clear whether this increase in searches will turn into an increase in actual divorces, but it’s a trend worth keeping an eye on.
Changing routines and emotions may drive a seasonal spike in divorce interest
According to psychologist Dr. Danielle Forshee, who was interviewed for the Post article, “the increase in sunlight can literally change your brain,” altering mood, behavior, and cognition. Slow times at work and time away from school may also provide married people with an opportunity to reflect, recognize that they are not happy in their marriages, and make a change.
Indeed, getting divorced in the summer does have its advantages compared to other times of the year. For couples with children, summer vacation allows the children to work through their emotions and get used to new living arrangements before returning to the pressures of the school year.
Furthermore, for many (though not all) adults, summer is a relatively slow time at work due to customer vacations and summer breaks. More time away from work or flexibility in work hours can make it easier to deal with the logistics of divorce and settle into new routines.
It will be interesting to see whether this trend continues over the course of the summer. For people in unhappy marriages, the additional time spent together over the summer can highlight existing issues and bring additional strain to relationships. Furthermore, the end of the summer, much like the end of the calendar year, is a natural transition point when people may reflect on their lives and marriages and decide to make a change.
What to do if you’re thinking about divorce this summer
If this season has you reflecting on your relationship, you’re not alone. But before making any sudden moves, it’s important to take a few intentional steps. Begin by gathering key documents, including financial records, household budgets, and any information about shared assets or debts. Think about your goals: Do you want to separate temporarily? Move forward with divorce? Focus on co-parenting strategies?
Summer’s flexibility may offer the space to start these conversations or meet with a lawyer discreetly. A consultation doesn’t commit you to anything—it simply gives you clarity. Whether you’re weighing your options or ready to move forward, having trusted legal guidance early on can make the process smoother and less stressful.
Summer can feel like the right time, but that doesn’t make it easy
There’s something about summer that encourages reflection. The slower pace, longer days, and time spent with (or apart from) family can surface emotions that have been building for months—or years. Realizing your marriage isn’t working is painful, no matter the season. And making a decision as significant as divorce often comes with guilt, grief, and uncertainty about the future.
You don’t have to navigate those feelings alone. Whether you’re still considering your options or ready to move forward, surrounding yourself with experienced, compassionate professionals can make all the difference. With the right guidance, this season of change can also be a season of growth.
