What do preschoolers need during a parent's divorce?

How can you help young kids when you are going through a divorce? If you have children who are toddlers or of preschool or pre-kindergarten age, you will want to remember that their view of the world is very different than yours. Addressing things in the way that they can comprehend is essential when supporting them through this process.

Today's Parent explains that very young children tend to be naturally egocentric in that they cannot really separate themselves from the world around them. Therefore, when one parent is all of a sudden gone, they are more likely to think the parent left them than the parent left the other parent. By the same token, when it comes time to talk to a three- or four-year-old about divorce, you should be prepared to talk in concrete terms about what parts of their lives will change and what will remain the same.

Kids at this stage of life need to know who will make their breakfast, who will read them a bedtime story and whether or not they will still go to Grandma's house for dinner on Sundays. Another important thing to know is that young children likely need these concepts reinforced, just like they want a favorite book read over and over again. Parents should be prepared to have similar conversations multiple times and provide consistent answers to questions each time.

This information is not intended to provide legal advice but is rather meant to help Illinois parents of young children guide their kids emotionally through a parental divorce.
