Balancing summer vacation plans after a divorce

If this summer is your first big vacation or school break season after getting divorced in Illinois, you and your kids will be in for some changes. But, you do not have to let this reality turn summer vacation into a chore or a disappointment. With the right level of conscious effort on your part, it can be a fun time for your kids and a valuable way of enhancing your relationship with them.

Parenting magazing indicates that one very important thing to focus on is putting your kids first. In some cases, this may even mean complimenting and supporting a decision made by your former spouse. For example, if your kids' other parent found and planned a particular outing or camp that the kids are really excited about, try not to let this make you feel jealous. If you do, this feeling could come through as negativity when you talk to your kids. Instead, concentrate on the benefit of the event or activity for your kids and let conversations about it be positive.

Especially for a first summer after a divorce, it may be helpful for your kids to keep some consistency and let them do some of the things they have typically done in the summertime. Letting them have some input into their activities as they age may also help them through this time.

This information is not intended to provide legal advice but is instead meant to give divorced parents in Illinois important guidance and reminders on how to make summer vacation time special for their children even when no longer married to the other parent.
